Aerial photographs <br />helonging to the SCS and ASCS were used to map all the phreatophyte <br />area from Pueblo to the state line. The total phreatophyte area was <br />subdivided into five subcategories based on density and type as deter- <br />mined from the photographs, The tracing of phreatophyte area (as <br />obtained from photos) was then transferred to a I: ,:4, 000 scale <br />(7 1/2 minute Quadrangle) map and copies were provided to the <br />USGS in either 1963 or 1964, Aerial photograph>; for 1936, 1947, and <br />1957 were used to compare the changes in phreatophyte area and <br />density with time, The 1962 field >;tudie>; updated the analyses, and <br />some evaluation of 1964 photographs for the area immediately downstream <br />from Pueblo have been made. Estimate>; were made and published by <br />Bittinger and Stringham on the total acreage and water use by the <br />phreatophytes for the entire river valley, The maps of phreatophytes <br />have not been published, <br /> <br />Crop Pattern Data' <br />A windshield survey of the irrigated crop>; helwt:en La Junta <br />and Las Animas was made in the fall of 1961, Aerial photographs <br />taken in 1957 were used to map tht: individual Cl'OP pattern (field by <br />field) and crop acreages were measured from the photographs. This <br />data was used in conjunction with the Colorado Agrlcultural Statistics <br />publication to determine historic crop acreages within the La Junta <br />to Las Animas >;tudy area, <br /> <br />Domestic, Industrial and lrrigation Use of Water - <br />A study was made by Morris Skinner for the Colorado Department <br />of 'Commerce'and Development. in. I 964,and-I.96 5--to,evaluate the water. <br />use and potential water resources of the Arkansas Valley, Data on <br />municipal and industrial use for many of the cities was compiled for <br />various periods of record, Summaries of streamflow and diversion <br />records were also included, <br /> <br />Groundwater Data' <br />Other data supplied by the USGS to Colorado State University <br />is available with some on IBM cards. <br />
