This saliniey verification study area is within the boundaries of the

Navajo Nation and concerned with the irrigaeed cropland along ehe San Juan River.

The irrigaeed land extends from the vicinity of Fruieland to the vicinity of

Cudei and consists of about 8,400 acres with irrigation rights in three

irrigation districts. Table 1 shows some characteristics of the districts. Full

season supplies of irrigation water are available for diversion from the San Juan

River at the Fruitland, Hogback, and Cudei diversions. This district is

in Reach 4 and contains about 3,300 acres of reservation cropland. The majority

of the Fruitland district lies east of the Hogback Monocline which marks the

western (downstream) terminus of the upper San Juan Basin. On the reservation, a

small amount of this district extends west of the Hogback.

The Hogback Irrigation District is in Reaches 4 and 5. It begins immediately

west of the Hogback Monocline. For consistency with the New Mexico. study, the

Hogback Monocline marks the beginning of the lower San Juan Basin. This district

contains about 4,500 acres of reservation cropland.

8
