Metropolitan Water Supply Investigations - Phase II Plan of Study
7/5/94 4:17 PM

Page 22

Key Technical Support. Technical staff from Hydrosphere and subcontractors as
needed.

1. Sub-Task Sa: Conjunctive Use Options and Summary Report

a) Purpose
Based upon the location, extent, and availability of both groundwater and
surface water supplies identified for conjunctive use, generally formulate
operational alternatives for integrated use of the sources that maximize new
fum yield water supplies for the metro area.

Based upon an understanding of both the physical and economic depletion of
the non-tributary Denver Basin aquifers, determine, for the operational
schemes identified, the length of time the groundwater system may be utilized.
Assess the operational schemes based upon the length of time to system
depletion.

Summarize the technical, legal, economic, and environmental issues explored
during Phase II pertaining to this subject area in a single report format.

b) Approach
Identify, through research of existing materials and reports and through
brainstorming, the alternatives for using groundwater to maximize yields from
the various surface water supplies. In particular, review and evaluate the
study of conjunctive use yield prepared by the Denver Water, and any similar
studies conducted for Barr Lake supplies.

Evaluate the fum yield of the various operational alternatives identified for
each of the surface water supplies.

Evaluate the firm yield and operational schemes that can be developed by the
addition of small scale, local storage reservoirs.

Evaluate the fum yield and operational schemes that can be developed through
aquifer recharge programs.
,
Determine preliminary schemes for the collection, treatment, and distribution
of both the groundwater and surface water components to generate a broad
comparison of the alternatives and to identify up-front potential for shared use
of existing facilities.

Under the preferred operational schemes, estimate the frequency versus
amount of groundwater withdrawal.
