COLORADO RIVER RECOVERY PROGRAM
FY 94 ANNUAL PROJECT REPORT

RECOVERY PROGRAM
PROJECT NUMBER: 22-A

I, Project Title: INTERAGENCY STANDARDIZED MONITORING PROGRAM

II, Principal Investigator(s):

Frank K. Pfeifer, Project Leader
Charles W. McAda, Fishery Biologist
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
764 Horizon Drive, South Annex A
Grand Junction, Colorado 81506
(303) 245-9319: Fax 245-6933
E-mail: R6FFA GRJ@FWS,GOV

III. Project Summary:

The Interagency Standardized Monitoring Program (ISMP) was developed to
monitor population trends of Colorado squawfish and humpback chub in
the Colorado River Basin. ISMP targets YOY Colorado squawfish in the
Green and Colorado rivers (sampling about 70% of the known YOY
squawfish distribution in the Green River and about 80% in the Colorado
River), subadult and adult Colorado squawfish in the Green, Colorado,
White, and Yampa rivers (sampling 20-30% of occupied habitat within
each of the four rivers), and adult humpback chub in Black Rocks and
Westwater Canyon on the Colorado River. ISMP began in 1986 and is
scheduled to continue as long as the Recovery Program is in place, A
summary report describing the results of the first 7 years (1986-1992)
of ISMP was produced and finalized by the Recovery Program in 1994.
The report made a number of recommendations for minor changes, most of
which were adopted by the Biology Committee. The most important change
involves additional sampling targeted at subadult-adult Colorado
squawfish. An annual report summarizing data collected in 1993 also
was completed in 1994,

IV, Study Schedule: 1986 to end of Recovery Program

V, Relationship to RIPRAP: General Recovery Program Support Action Plan,
V,A,I. Conduct Standardized Monitoring Program,

VI, Accomplishment of FY 94 TasKs and Deliverables, Discussion of Initial
Findings and Shortcomings:

A summary report describing the results of the first 7 years
(1986-1992) of the standardized monitoring program was produced and
finalized by the program (McAda, et al. 1994a), This report made a
number of recommendations for minor changes to ISMP, Most of these
recommendations were supported by the Habitat-Life History (HLH)
Subcommittee and were adopted by the Biology Committee.

The most important change involved an option for additional sampling
targeted at subadult-adult Colorado squawfish, On an interim basis,
investigators will conduct additional sampling in various parts of the
upper basin. Investigators will either resample ISMP reaches using an
alternate technique such as block and shock or sample river reaches not
