.

.

1.4 Response

No response is required for section 1.

2. PROJECT SETTING

2.1 Description of ~ediate Unit Area

The Glenwood-Dotsero Springs are located in west central Colorado
separated by the narrow scenic Glenwood Canyon (See Appendix 6 location map
No. 1244-417-1). The Glenwood Springs are at the west end of Glenwood Canyon
and the Dotsero Springs 16 miles to the east. The city of Glenwood Springs,
which surrounds the Glenwood springs area, has a population of about 4,000.
The small community of Dotsero lies about 2-1/2 miles east of the Dotsero
Springs area. The Eagle River enters the Colorado River at Dotsero and the
Roaring Fork River joins the Colorado River at Glenwood Springs. Thermal
springs enter the Colorado River from both banks and from the river bed.
About one-half of the known springs discharge above the low flow water surface
of the river. Some of the larger Glenwood Springs have been developed for
commercial swimming pools and private mineral hot baths. The Dotsero Springs
are presently undeveloped and some may have been disturbed or covered by
construction of Interstate Highway 70 (1-70).

Interstate Highway 70 is the major east-west road in this area
except through Glenwood Canyon where the designation is U.S. Highway 6 as 1-70
has not yet been constructed. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad runs east
from Glenwood Springs through Dotsero to Denver, and west through Grand
Junction to Salt Lake City, Utah. Glenwood Springs has a small airport,
however, the nearest commercial airport is at Grand Junction, about 90 miles
westward. The immediate unit area has topographic coverage by the Glenwood
Springs, Shoshone, Cottonwood Pass, and Glenwood Springs (4NE) (advance
proof), Colorado, 7.5 minute, U.S. Geological Survey quadrangle maps.

2.2 Response

No response is required for section 2.

3. INVESTIGATIONS

3.1 Previous

3.1.1 Available Information and Sources

The following information concerning the Glenwood-Dotsero
Springs Unit is available for review at Water and Power's regional office
in Salt Lake City, Utah, (Room 6101, Federal Building, 125 South State
Street, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111), or the Grand Junction Projects Office
in Grand Junction, Colorado, (764 Horizon Drive, Grand Junction, Colorado
81501). Information and sources stated are from several agencies; however,
it should not be considered as a complete list of the material available.
Additional information may be available from the Colorado Division of Wild-
life, U.S. Forest Service, State and Federal Highway agencies, the Colorado

D-2
