<br />Fish and Wildlife <br /> <br />Two national fish hatchenes developed <br />with CRSP funds are performing impor. <br />tant roles in the Joint Slale.Federal <br />approach to meeting lish Slocking <br />requirements. <br /> <br />1. Jones Hole National FIsh Hatchery, <br />located in a deep canyon on Jones Hole <br />Creek near Dinosaur National Monument <br />in northeastern Ulah. produced 160,000 <br />pounds of fIsh - about 60 percent of <br />capacIty - in 1978. Total capacity wllh <br />the present access road is about 280,000 <br />pounds. If the road were improved to pro. <br />vide access during winter conditions. the <br />hatchery COuld produce abOut 300,000 <br />pounds. Most of the fIsh are used 10 <br />stock Flaming Gorge and Fontenelle <br />Reservoirs. <br /> <br />2. Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery IS <br />located on the north lork 01 the Gunnison <br />River near HotChkiss. Colo. Its output of <br />2,055.000 rainbow trout went principally <br />for stOCKing requirements of Blue Mesa. <br />Crawford. lemon, and Silver JaCK Reser. <br />voirs in Colorado, and Navajo ReservOir in <br />Colorado and New Me)(ico. Tota! produc- <br />tion of the hatchery was reduced 20 per. <br />cent from the previous year because of <br />low water leveL <br /> <br />One National Wildlde refuge and three <br />waterfowl areas under State administra- <br />tion are being developed In connection <br />with the CRSP. <br /> <br />14 <br /> <br /> <br />Jono>sHol/jt'1lalOonalF,shHatChe<y Ulah <br /> <br />1, Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge <br />lies along the Green River below <br />Fontenelle Dam in Wyoming. It has been <br />administered by the Fish and Wildlife <br />Service Since 1966_ During fiscal year <br />1978. a refuge headquarters consisting of <br />an office/visitor contact building and <br />three residences was constructed. A <br />1,ooo.acre land mitigation paCKage also <br />was completed through the courts. but It <br />is under appeal by Ihe owner. <br /> <br />2. Brown's ParK Waterfowl Management <br />Area. administered by the Utah Division <br />of Wildlife Resources, IS located below <br />Flaming Gorge Dam on the Green River <br />near the Utah.Colorado State line_ The <br />area is attracting numerous resident and <br />migratory game bird populations and also <br />is increasingly popular as a fIshing. <br />hunting. and bird.watching site. <br /> <br />3. Miller Mesa Waterfowl Area is on the <br />west shore of the Navajo ReservOir just <br />south of the Colorado.New Mexico State <br />line_ A small reservOir and two terraced <br />ponds have been completed and filled. <br />About 170 acres of agricultural land have <br />been planted with barley. oats, wheal. <br />and alfalfa for wildlife management pur. <br />poses. Waterfowl use patterns indicate <br />that birds from other agricultural and <br />reSllng areas In the San Juan Valley are <br />using the Miller Mesa site With increasing <br />frequency. <br /> <br />4. Ad. <br />ministered by the Utah Division of <br />Wildlife Resources Since January 1968. <br />the area's contribution 10 waterfowl <br />resources management was significantly <br />increased by rehabilitation of the historic <br />Desert Lake Dike and completion of five <br />additional diked areas below the existing <br />impoundment. <br /> <br />Several prOjects have been initiated to <br />mitigate fishery and big game losses and <br />to help solve problems caused by Ihe <br />construction of CRSP features. <br /> <br />Curecanll Unit, Colorado: The 5.year <br />fishery investigations of the lower Gun. <br />nison River drainage were completed_ A <br />fisherman rrght-of-way access was ac. <br />quired at the confluence of the North <br />Fork and Gunnison Rivers. <br /> <br />Flaming Gorge Unit, Utah: ModifIcation of <br />powerplant intake structures lor water <br />temperature control was completed. <br />Water and POwer is cooperating with the <br />Utah Division of Wildlife Resources on a <br />downstream study to determine the <br />modificatIon ellects. <br /> <br />Bonneville Unit, Central Utah Project, <br />Utah: The Bureau of Indian Affairs and <br />Ihe Utah Indian Trrbe have completed <br />feaSibility studies for proposed waterfowl <br />management areas along the lower <br />Duchesne River. <br />
