.

'303()

Flood CanaJ.s. The inlet canaJ. diverts from the Purgatoire Hi ver

and intercepts some flood water from arroyos between the river

.

and the reservoir. The Johns Flood Ditch diverts water from the
ri ver through the upper reaches of the Model Inlet CanaJ. and
water is delivered to irrigators aJ.ong its course, with some
unused water going to Model Reservoir. The Model Inlet Canal
water right practicaJ.ly amounts to only a flood right because of
its junior priority date.
Ninemile system
This system is located on the west side of the Purgatoire
River about 75 miles below Trinidad near Higbee, Colorado. Since
1927 the average annuaJ. area irrigated has been 1,700 acres, with
an average annuaJ. diversion of about 4,900 acre-feet. The canaJ.
has a capacity of about 100 c.f.s. and a decreed water right of
18.0 c.f.s., with a priority date of May 10, 1887. The system
has no storage facilities. The annuaJ. runoff of the Purgatoire
River at Ninemile Diversion Dam is generaJ.ly greater than the
discharge at Trinidad. Direct flow rights of 323 c.f.s. (299
c.f.s. in the Trinidad Project area above Ninemile, and 24 c.f.s.
at Highland, below Ninemile) are senior to the Ninemile decree of
18.0 c.f.s. and are sufficient to utilize all normal streamflow

passing Trinidad.

.

Highland (Sizer) system
This system is located on the west side of the Purgatoire
River at the south edge of the Arkansas VaJ.ley. Its diversion
dam is about 15 miles below the Ninemile Canal heading. The

36

,'. -,-~--
