.

.

.

302-i

CHAPTER 4.--WATER RIGHTS

Pertinent data relative to water rights of ditches and reser-

voirs in the Purgatoire River Valley between the Trinidad damsite

and the mouth of the river, exclusive of works located on the

tributaries, are listed in table 11. Inasmuch as numerous transfers

have been made in original water rights, the grouping of rights by

ditch ownership in the order of their present location on the

ri ver below the damsi te is shown in table 12.

Upstream rights

The water supply studies are based on recorded flow at

Trinidad and upstream diversions a.re automatically taken into

account. It is anticipated that there will be no future upstream

depletion to adversely affect the use of water belOW the damsite.

Trinidad Project

Table 12 lists all water rights which apply to the project

a.rea. The Ninemile and Highland Canal rights a.re also listed

al tho\lgh these two ditches are nea.r the mouth of the river, far

below the project area.

The Model Reservoir and Johns Lake, units of the Model Irri-

gation System, are the only storage facilities in the project area.

Johns Lake, with a 345 acre-feet storage right, has not been

operated for many years. Model Reservoir has a decree for 20,000

acre-feet. However, because of heavy sedimentation the present

usable capacity of the reservoir is less than 10,000 acre-feet.

The usable reservoir is supplied by the Model Inlet and Johns

33
