.

.

.

DRAFT

of stream pollution, from feedlots, irrigation return flows, fertilizers,

chemicals, etc. Nitrate pollution of groundwaters has been found in the

South Platte Basin.

o
Many mountain properties have been built on the basis of the owner

providing his own waste-disposal system. Due to lack of adequate soil.

mantle, much property is located on fractured granite. This formation

affords good percolation rate of septic-tank effluent, but it quite often

provides direct contact to nearby wells.

Mine waste has been a long-time problem in Colorado, and mine wastes

are generally highly acidic. . In August, 1971, the U. S. Geological

Su~vey initiated a study of the mine-waste problem in the state. Com-

pletion of this study will permit a better definition of the extent of

the problem and the control measures needed.

. Outdoor recreation in Colorado covers a wide range of activities.

Primary waste management problems associated with outdoor recreation in

the state are concerned with camping, snow skiing, boating, and resort

communities. The concentration of recreational activities in small areas

during short periods of time makes wastes from the aforementioned

activities particularly significant. Disposal of wastes from recreational

areas becomes increasingly important because of the rapid growth in

recreational use and development. The problem is further compounded

.because a high level of waste treatment will usually be required if

the high .quality of the water found in recreational areas is to be

preserved.

....
II:)
C\I
'C)

Three major sources contribute the bulk of the total salinity

concentrations to the state's streams.

(1) The contributions resulting from applied quantities of water

during irrigation of cropland.

~--~ - --- - ----

-19-
