Non-conflicting wildlife <br />habitat management objectives, projects, and <br />mitigating measures will be Incorporated Into <br />new FMPs. Existing wlldl~e habitat projects will <br />be maintained and new prajscts developed ~ <br />they will not decreass the woodland base. <br /> <br />Livestock Grazing. Non-conflicting livestock <br />grazing management objsctlves, projects, and <br />mitigating measures will be Incorporated Into <br />new FMPs. Existing livestock projects will be <br />maintained and new projscts developed ~ they <br />will not decrease the woodland base. <br /> <br />Off-Road Vehicles. Ths managemsnt unit will <br />be open to ORV use except In crucial desr and <br />elk winter range (28,552 acres) where vehicle <br />use will be limited to designated roads and trails <br />from December 1 through April 30 ~ necessary <br />to reduce stress on wintering deer and elk. Use <br />of ORVs for woodland managsmsnt and harvest <br />purposes will be authorized year-round. <br /> <br />Access. Public access will be acquired Intoths <br />Beaver Hili and Linscott Canyon areas for wood- <br />land harvest and recreation purposss. <br /> <br />Fire Management. A total of 25,162 acres of <br />public land will be managed under the fire sup- <br />pression category, with 21,187 acres IdentWled <br /> <br />.. , . <br />..... _ . I.. I <br /> <br />Management Decls/ons <br /> <br />for Intensive suppression and 3,975 acres Iden- <br />tified for conditional suppression. A total of <br />22,445 acres will be managed under ths fire-use <br />category where fire will bs utilized as a manage- <br />ment tool. Planned or natural Ignitions meeting <br />pre-determlned prescriptions will be allowed on <br />these arsas. <br /> <br />MANAGEMENT UNIT 4 <br /> <br />40,792 Acres of Public Surface; 8 percent ofthe <br />Planning Area <br /> <br />Management Unit 4 consists of the 40,792 <br />acres of public lands surrounding the Gunnison <br />Gorge. The management unit Is charactsrlzed <br />by a diversity of landscapes and high-value <br />recreation opportunities. The need to protect <br />both the quality and diversity of rscreatlon op- <br />portunities and to facilitate recreation use will be <br />recognized as Important during the formulation <br />of management decisions affecting ths area. <br /> <br />Ths management unit will be managed as the <br />Gunnison Gorge Special Recreation Manage- <br />mentArea (SRMA). Maps, Interpretive materials, <br />and facilities will be developed. Recreallon use <br />will be monitored and possibly restricted as <br />necessary to protect natural features and recrea- <br />tion opportunities. <br /> <br />Lands In the Peach Valley area (15,610 acres) <br />will be managed for ORV recreation oppor- <br />tunities. A minimum of restrictions would be <br />placed on surface-dlsturblng actlvltlss and a <br />high concentration of recreation users will be <br />permitted within this area. <br /> <br />Motorized access to the remainder of the <br />managemsnt unit (25,182 acres) will be limited <br />to designated road and trails, the majority of <br />which are primitive In character. This area will be <br />managed to maintain a predominantly natural <br />environment with low but evident human con- <br />centrations and Impacts. <br /> <br />16 <br />
