Llvsstock grazing will <br />continue at current forage allocation levels and <br />seasons of use unless studies determine adjust- <br />ments are needed. Livestock will have first <br />priority for all add~lonal forage made available <br />as a result of livestock operator-funded ran- <br />geland Improvement projects. Non-conflicting <br />livestock management objectives, projects, and <br />m~lgatlng measures will be Incorporated Into <br />new wildlife HMPs. Facility development and <br />land treatment projscts will be permitted if they <br />would be compatible w~h wildlife habitat <br />management objectives. <br /> <br />./ ' <br />Forestry. The management un~ will be avail- <br />able for woodland product harvests. On 37,007 <br />acres of crucial deer and elk winter range, <br />seasonal restrictions on harvest may be neces- <br />sary from December 1 through April 30 to reduce <br />stress on wintering deer and elk. Woodland har- <br />vest will be designed to Increase forage produc- <br />tion and will be compatible w~h wildlife hab~at <br />management obJectives. <br /> <br />Off-Road Vehicles. A total of 2,482 acres In <br />the Camel Back/upper Roubldeau Cresk <br />drainage area will be closed to ORV use. Vehicle <br />use In the remainder of the management un~ will <br />be limited to designated roads and trails from <br />December 1 through April 30. Variances to this <br />seasonal IIm~atlon may be granted If ORV use <br />would not result in any negative Impacts on <br />wlntsrlng desr and elk. <br /> <br />Vlaual Resources. The management un~ will <br />be managed under VRM Class III guidelines. <br /> <br />Major Utilities. Public access will be acquired Into the <br />McDonald Mesa, Roatcap-Jay Creek, Spaulding <br />Peak/Dry Creek, Oak Mesa, and Oak Ridge <br />areas for hunting and other recreational uses, <br />wildlife habitat management, and timber and <br />woodlands managemsnt. <br /> <br />FIre Management. A total of 53,502 acres of <br />public surface will be managed under the fire <br />suppression category, w~h 48,118 acres Iden- <br />tified for Intensive suppression and 5,384 acres <br />Identified for cond~lonal suppression. A total of <br />13,818 acres will be managed under the fire-use <br />category where fire will be lnlllzed as a manage- <br />ment tool. Planned or natural Ignitions meeting <br />pre-determlned prescriptions will be allowed In <br />these areas. <br /> <br />MANAGEMENT UNIT 3 <br /> <br />47,607 Acres of Public Surface; 10 percent of <br />the Planning Area <br /> <br />Management Unit 3 consists of 47,607 acres of <br />public land located primarily on the northeast- <br />facing slopes of the Uncompahgre Plateau. The <br />management unlt contains some of the most <br />productive pinyon-Juniper woodland s~es In the <br />planning area which are used extensively for live- <br />stock grazing and are valuable dser and elk <br />habitat. <br /> <br />The management un~ will be managed for sus- <br />tained yield production of the woodland <br />resource within the allowable cln restrictions <br />detsrmlned by the TPCC Inventory (23,206 <br />acres). <br /> <br />15 <br />
