Identify lands suttable for disposal or <br />lands that should be retained In pUblic <br />ownership. <br /> <br />2. Identify non-federal lands that would <br />best serve public needs and Interests ff In <br />pUblic ownership. <br /> <br />A total of 143 tracts of public land <br />totalling 11,026 acres are Identified for <br />further consideration for disposal. The <br />remaining 472,050 will be retained In- <br />publiC ownership. <br /> <br />If available, prlvate lands may be ac- <br />quired In Management Untts 1, 2,4, 7, <br />9, 11 (see page 29 for acqulsttlon <br />crtterla) <br /> <br />COAL <br /> <br />3. Identify thoss areas within the <br />Paonla/Somerset and Bookcllffs coal <br />areas which would be sultabls for further <br />leasing consideration. Determine areas <br />where coal development could result In <br />conflicts with water nseds and/or water <br />rights. Categorize lease areas with con- <br />sideration for potential development <br />problems and managsment conflicts. <br /> <br />83,334 acres of Federal coal estate In <br />the Paonla/Somerset Clmarron Ridge <br />and Bookcllffs coal areas are Identified <br />as suitable for further coal leasing con- <br />slderallon. <br /> <br />WATER QUALITY 4. Identify major source areas con- <br />(SALINITY) trlbutlng to the salinity problem In the <br />Colorado River drainage. Determine <br />usss that contribute salinity and develop <br />measures to curtail ths problem. <br /> <br />Public lands totalling 26,547 acres <br />will bs Intensively managed to reduce <br />salinity loads In the Colorado River <br />drainage. <br /> <br />FORESTRY <br /> <br />5. Identify those woodlands In the plan- <br />ning area which will be managed <br />predominantly for either forage produc- <br />tion or woodland products. <br /> <br />Commercial forest on 3,127 acres <br />and suitable woodlands on 24,255 <br />acres would be Intensively managed <br />for forest products. Seasonal restric- <br />tions would apply on 1,606 acres of <br />commercial forest. <br /> <br />7 <br />
