~< ...-
.;..

Raised by:

Representing

.

Edwin Me~rick

National Wildlife Federation

Response:

There are a limited number of dive~sions on the East Slope, which could
affect flows in the Arkansas River. These include the Halfmoon Diversion
and the diversion of the native flows of the'Lake Fo~k from the drainage
above T~quoise Lake. Turquoise Lake was previously operated by the
CF&I Steel Corporation, which made no ~eleases to the Lake Fork when its
storage right was in effect. The Bureau will be making releases to the
Lake F~rk of 15.0 ft3/s (minimum of 10) f~om May 15 th~ough October and
3.0 ft /s for the ~emainder of the year. These will be supplemented
by the 6.7 ft3/s of flow th~ough water supplied to the Leadville National
Fish Hatche~. As a result, flows in the Arkansas River should approxi-
mate pre-Project conditions, even though no winter b~pass flows'are
,provided at Halfmoon Diversion. There will be 16 ft /s bypassed at
Halfmoon Diversion during, the irrigation season to meet senior downstream
water rights. Since deletion of the Malta Dive~sion, Arkansas River
flows will be reduced only during peak flow periods. Flows in the
A~kansas Rive~ below its confluence with Clea~ Creek will be augmented
by wate~s f~om the West Slope. With the limited effect on the flows in
the A~kansas River, the~e is little need for inclusion of minimum flows
in the rive~.

.

.

XI-48l
