However, they

are higher than a projection of the historic trend.

~
~
~
o

A large part of the salinity control program is included

in the Bureau of Reclamation program for water quality improve-

ment and the Department of Agriculture's onfarm salinity control

activities. Public Law 93-320, the Colorado River Basin Sali-

nity Control Act authorized the construction of four salinity

control units and the expeditious completion of identified

salinity control projects for feasibility reports. Of these

units, Grand Valley and Paradox Valley are currently under

construction. Crystal Geyser, which was originally authorized,

has been indefinitely postponed because of low cost effective-

ness, and Las Vegas Wash construction has been deferred so that
t
a reevaluation can be made of the hydro-salinity system and

resolution of the controversy surrounding the future development

of the wash. Verification studes at Meeker Dome resulted in

the plugging of three abandon oil exploration holes, which were

believed to be the sources of salt. Monitoring has confirmed

the success of the well plugging and reduction of salt load of

about 57,000 tons/year.

The Department of Agriculture's cost share onfarm salinity

control activities are being effectively implemented in the

Grand Valley and Uinta Basin. Since the program began in

1979, USDA estimates a combined salt load reduction:'from the

~

two areas of about 50,000 tons per year.

The Forum recognized the need for amendments to P.L. 93-

320.
