Bird species with

the potential to occur nearby include various songbirds, raptors, and game birds.

Mammals with the potential to occur include various species of small mammals such as

rats, mice, bats, moles, and shrews as well as larger species such as raccoon, red fox,

coyote, bobcat, skunk, squirrel, rabbit, and mule deer. Mountain lions also may

occasionally frequent the area.

Riparian areas along the Cache la Poudre River and other riparian habitats crossed by

the canals are characterized by mature cottonwood forests that provide habitat for

numerous wildlife species including raptors, songbirds, and mammals,

Proposed Action

There would be no change in the operation or management of the canals. Regular

maintenance activities would continue as at present. There would be no change to the

wildlife habitat currently present at the site.

No Action Alternative
If the title to the selected water facilities were retained by the United States, there
would be no change to regular maintenance activities or to the wildlife habitat.

Federally Listed Species
A number of federally listed threatened and endangered species have the potential to
occur near the facilities proposed for title transfer (Table 1). A Biological Assessment
(BA) was prepared and submitted to FWS, This BA addresses potential effects to
federally listed species and candidate species for listing (Appendix B). The BA
detennined that the bald eagle and Preble's meadow jwnping mouse likely occur in the
vicinity of the facilities proposed for transfer. The remainder of the federally listed and
candidate species with potential to occur in the vicinity have a low potential to occur near
the title transfer facilities (Table 1), Depending on locations, seasonality of the activity,
and the type and extent of the activity, potential periodic maintenance of the facilities

18
