o 0 13 ~J.~

.

.

REPORT OF THE WATER RESOURCES DIVISION

U. S, GEOLOGICAL SURVEY

April 6, 1966

Runoff for most of the State has been above normal since the snow-
melt season and spring floods last year. The relatively high runoff
last month was primarily due to unseasonably warm weather and may be
detrimental to water supplies for the coming irrigation season. Below
normal precipitation in many areas and loss of snow in the mountains
through early melting and evaporation indicates a low runoff this
season unless excessive precipitation occurS. Carryover storage in
reservoirs will provide adequate water for the areas that have storage
facilities.

Although scheduled field work has been completed in the Piceance
Basin and the report is being prepared, considerable field activity
is still going on. The Bureau of Mines and AEC are letting contracts
to deepen their Yellow Creek No. 1 Test Hole and to drill an additional
test hole. A program of logging and hydrologic testing is scheduled
for both test holes. The proposed in situ recovery of oil from the oil
shale and other activities currently under development will require con-
tinuous monitering and evaluation of the water resources in the Piceance
Basin. By cooperating with other agencies and interests that are doing
testing in the Basin, much hydrologic data can be obtained at a com-
paratively low cost and the development of the Basin will be aided.

Work continues on the testing and analysis of the analog model of
the Arkansas Valley. Seven members of the Southeastern Colorado Water
Conservancy District and John Patterson of the State Engineer's Office
visited the Analog Model Unit in Phoenix on February 23 to view the
model. The Hydrology Committee of the Arkansas Valley Task Force held
a meeting in the Analog Model Unit Laboratory in Phoenix on April 1.
F. L. Sparks, Director, Fred Boydston, and Carter Hutchinson of the
Colorado Water Conservation Board, A. Ralph Owens, State Engineer, and
George Colburn of the State Engineer's Office, Morton Bittinger of
Colorado State University, Ralph Strother of the Albuquerque Corps of
Engineers Office, and L. A. Wood, D. R. Albin, C. T. Jenkins, and J. E,
Moore of the Geological Survey attended the meeting. John Moore described
the hydrologic environment of the Arkansas Valley and discussedo/the data
used to construct the model. Gene Patten described the model and
demonstrated Some of its uses.

A mass measurement of water levels in the Arkansas Valley and in
Baca County was made during the weeks of March 21 and 28.

1
