The canal is presently used for the delivery

of water to project irrigated land when available during the irrigation

months, and as feeder canal for the Harvey Gap Reservoir during the

non-irrigation season. The canal heads on East Rifle Creek a short

distance below the tailrace of the Rifle Falls hydroelectric plant of

-;c

the ~lblic Service Compaqy and discharges in the Harvey Gap Reservoir

near the town of Silt. Provision has been made for the canal to also

convey water around the Harvey Gap Reservoir and discharge the same

I
,I

in the natural stream channel below the reservoir where it is used

.1

directly for irrigation of Ha,rvey Mesa land.

Along its course the Grass Valley Canal crosses a number of

weathered shale points where seepage losses are high. It is planned

to line the canal around such points by the excavation of shale material

from the wetted section of the canal and lining with clay which is

readi1Jr available in the immediate vicinity of the seepage sections.

'):'his work, along with needed canal structures, is estimated to cost

> . ~.
i;;.:';
:~~
,,'I

;.\26,000.

"

1"..

, Dry Elk Laterals
Lands of Dry Elk Valley, above the Harvey Gap Reservoir, totaling

1,500 acres will be served water by two new laterals each of which will

be approximately 4 miles in length. One lateral of capacity 20 second-

feet will serve the land of the north side of the valley and a second

lateral of 12 second-feet capacity will serve the land south of

1 -;
