CJ';
In
N

~ater Supply - Lower Rifle Creek Land
Eight small diversion ditches from Rifle Creek are used in the

irrigation of 2,973 .acres of lower Rifle Creek land. Seven of the

eight ditches divert from the creek below the Rifle Gap Dam and one,

the Davie Ditch, diverts from the creek a short distance above the dam

site. After construction of the Rifle Gap Dam water can be supplied the

seven ditches from reservoir releases to the natural creek channel.

The Davie Ditch will be supplied water by a riser pipe from the outlet

chamber of the dam at such times as water in the reservoir will flow by

gravity to the ditch, and by pumping with a direct connected turbine

,;1

purnp, using water discharged to lower lands as source of power, during

such times as the water surface in the reservoir is too low for gravity

flow to the ditch.

The eight ditches with acreages served are listed in the following

table. Water rights of the first seven are senior to the right of the

Grass Valley Canal while the right of the Davie Ditch is junior to that

of the Grass Valley Canal.

Land Acreage Under Lower Rifle Creek Ditches

Name of Ditch

Acreage Served

Pioneer and Squire Ditches
Grand Tunnel Ditch
Rifle Canyon Ditches
\,{isdom Ditch
Vetter Ditch
Raymond Ditch
Davie Ditch

228 acres
806 acres
1,137 acres
180 acres
118 acres
163 acres
341 acres

~:.;. ,

2,973 acres

Observations of water use along Rifle Creek have disclosed that

durin" the late sUllll!le!' months vlith the entire flow of P.ifle Creek diverted
'"

lJ
