~
I."':)
C\1

Water Supply - Grass Valley Canal Lan<!

Record of past diversions by the Grass Valley Canal would indicate

that in heavy run-off years on Rifle Creek the lands cropped under the

canal, amounting to approximately 4,090 acres on Harvey Mesa below the

Harvey Gap Reservoir and 1,130 acres in Dry Elk Valley above the reservoir,

have a fair supply of water. In dry years, on the other hand, very little

water is available for such lands after July 1 except that stored in the

Harvey Gap Reservoir. In the seven yea1" pe1"iod 1937-1943 sho1"tages are

estimated to have occurred as follows:

~ Shortap;e ~ Shortap;e
1937 48% 1941 11%
1938 8% 1942 0
1939 51% 1943 1+8%
1940 48% 7 Yr.Av. 3J-%

'.1
.

Plan of development calls for the construction of a dam on Rifle

Creek for the impounding of 10,000 acre-feet of wate1" at the ltifle Gap

Reservoir site and the improvement of the present Grass Valley Canal for

a diversion capacity of 70 second-feet. The Rifle Gap Reservoir will

conserve the winter flow and spring flood flow of Rifle Creek now wasted

to the Colorado River and make the same available for irrigation use

,.

on lower Rifle Creek land which holds the prior water rights of the

,....

Creek. The serving of lower Rifle Creek land with reservoir water will

release the natural flow of East Rifle Creek for diversion to Grass

Valley Canal land except for a small flow required in the irrigation of

184 acres of land located along East Rifle Creek below the diversion

point of.the Grass Valley Canal and above high water of the Rifle Gap

Reservoir.

It has been estimated 4 second-feet of water lNill be required by-

p

IlJ
