The Federal Committee met last <br />October9'to present needs and interests of Federal agencies. TheCom- <br />mittee on Water Data for Public Use met in Washington, D. C. on ,May 18, <br />1965. This Committee is composed of non-Federal national and regional <br />organizations, induding State agencies, concerned with the development <br />and conservation.of the Nation's water resources. <br /> <br />Topographic Surveys and Mapping <br /> <br />Current progress on Survey's continuing topographic mapping ,program <br />is shown on the small scale map of the PSFC region attached to this <br />report. <br /> <br />Wilderness Bill Surveys <br /> <br />Legislation passed by the Congress late in 1964 calls for the Geological <br />Survey and the Bureau of Mines to'evaluate the mineral potential of the <br />national forest land in the Wild, Wilderness, and Canoe areas within a <br />20-year per iod. In addition, equ ivalent data must be obtained forPrimi- <br />tive ..areas in the national fore,sts within 10 years so that they maybe <br />cons idered for indus ion in the Wilderness System. The results of the <br />evaluation,program will help guide the withdrawal of land from. mineral <br />leasing and,patent after December,3l, 1983,under the authority of the <br />Wilderness Act. <br /> <br />The Geological Survey program of evaluation of mineral resources began <br />in.May 1965, in the San Rafael Primitive Area in the California Coast <br />Range. Four geologists and a helicopter support crew are in the field to <br />make this appraisal, which will include preparation ofageologic recon- <br />naissance map and a geochemical survey. Oil and gas, phosphate" and <br />mercury are the most likely economic commodities in the San Rafael area. <br />Work will start shortly ins even other Primitive areas, including the high <br />Uintas .in Utah, and the Uncompahgre and Flat Top areas ,in Colorado. <br /> <br />Bureau of Mines'~ <br />Area VI San'Francisco <br /> <br />Canal Lining Investigations <br /> <br />Project work was suspended until receipt of Bureau of Reclamation's final <br />report, which is expected about June 3D, 1965. <br /> <br />~'This report also covers pertinent items from Area V, Denver. <br /> <br />14 <br /> <br /> <br />.';' <br />
