A defeated or wounded stallion was an easy prey for the
wolves and coyotes who followed the herd. The gestation per-
iod of the horse is longer than the bovine, thus nature planned
the stallion to remain the entire year with the herd as protector.
The horse like the deer is one of nature's masterpieces.

The bison was king of the western plains. Tradition has it
that immense herds covered the plains to the horizon and even
stopped the trains, The bison hide was thick, tough and covered
with a protecting double coat of hair that forms a mane on the
shoulders and head. He had a hump of surplus food, and while
not a true buffalo, would not mire in quicksand and mud like
the horse and his bovine associates. Unless the herd was de-,
moralized, the bulls isolated themselves to insure the calves came
in favorable season, One outstanding characteristic was his abil-
ity to pivot so he never presented a broadside to his enemy, an
ability not shared by the other bovines. His most outstanding
ability, however, was his instinct to place his protected head
near the ground and march directly into the teeth of the bliz-
zard wind that swept the plains too often in winter. Thus he
shortened the time duration of, the storm, all other' bovine drift-
ing with the wind if caught on the wind-swept plains lengthen
the time duration of the blizzard to the exhaustion limit. This
habit and instinct of the bison, king of the range, to meet trouble
more than half way and patiently struggle through until the
storm is over is indeed worthy of note and imitation.

As man came on the scene he found the area in harmony,
the land covered with vegetation, balanced life filling the lakes
and rivers to overflowing, balanced, thriving, developing animal
species living on a mat of grass and herbage, living on soil that
was continually building up in quality; a complete picture of
development, balance and abundance for all.

With the reader's help we have tried to draw this ancient
picture so that it will contrast with the picture that man with
his greed has recently produced against nature's plans. It might
