To illustrate, the male bird is usu-
ally high colored and the female camouflaged. He is higWy
colored, not so much to attract the female as we like to think,
but to attract attention of the enemy to himself and away from
the mate,

...... ;,'

-:'

, " , ' , I
'.

:~. :-: .. .

'. .'
. .... .... He came again after
the Spanish and other conquests and evidently rapidly increased
to vast herds in this Missouri basin. As already indicated he eats
the number one perennials and does not chew his cud. He has
a small stomach, great speed, grazing closely with his complete
set of teeth he requires more range than the cud-chewing bo-
vine: herds. In spite of his rapid increase he has enemies. In this
semi~arid climate he does not have a hump of stored food like
the bison or like his earlier associate, the camel. He cannot stand
winter, like the bison or hibernate like the bear. Aside from the
wolf pack he evidently had a special enemy in the mountain
lion as it is the instinct of the western horse to buck when
scratched. Nature provided a balance within the herd by the
character and habits of the stallions. This again represents' an
excellent illustration of the law above cited of the sexes being
born in the same percentage but the males are reduced by their
sacrifice in protecting the herd and in fighting for group leader-
ship. The herd organization of these ancient herds was almost
military in its order, especially when migrating, each stallion
leading a group of mares with an overall leader at the head of
the herd. The overall leader has five distinct calls all of which
have a definite meaning. In meeting a rival the herd is neutral,
but in meeting a common enemy the leader will give one of three
signals, a signal to flee, a signal to form a protecting ring around
the mares and colts or if attacked, gives the order and leads
an avalanche charge of the entire stampeding herd that would
trample to death any opposing enemy.

: .'. . ..:::.<.~.;:~:'~.~'_/:.
