It has been said that the history of any achievement is
simply the record of the men whose vision saw in advance,
whose efforts constantly promoted, and whose efforts were
finally crowned with success,

It would not be difficult to recall personally a score of
men, who, to our limited knowledge, have contributed outstand-
ing efforts to conservation in the Missouri Valley area, I confess
that the impulse is strong to compliment those outstanding men
as the programs are narrated, However, our limitations in this
vast area would not permit this to be done with faimess to the
rest of this large valley,

Also a great deal of credit is due to the areas far removed
from the Missouri Valley, An analysis of the outstanding Scotts-
bluff, Nebraska, irrigation project must credit the German Rus-
sian immigrant with the major share of the project's success,
the same standard of close analysis of the Orman Darn, South
Dakota, project would credit matured ability and talent in far
away Utah, Again we must all take off our hats in thanks to
our neighbors to the east, the people of Iowa and Minnesota
who were the first to retard and almost stop' the prairie fire
of timber loss and soil erosion that swept westward' from the
Atlantic seaboard with seemingly no opposition,

We must now consider the extent to which a book on
history of conservation should prescribe and recommend pro-
grams and cures for many evils that attack our natural resources,

In the valley of the Missouri River there are two million
citizens including 4-H club members and fuhue farmers who
have direct daily contact with the soil problem. They are in-
terested in conservation.
To this fraternity the writer belongs, nevertheless he would
hesitate, as farm guest,' to advise any member how to "land a
plow," "time a mower," or adjust a sieve on a combine, For
the same reason, recommendations cannot be made for or to
