combating a tree beetle infestation that is threatening rapid
destruction of the Black Hills pine. It is very evident what the
success or failure of this program might mean to the top soil
miles below this watershed. Again such a remote program as
the Commodity Credit Corporation fann storage of grain might
protect the top soil by encouraging good conservation farm prac-
tices by the security of grain in reserve, Or to say it backward,
the possible extreme need for food supplies and lack of sur-
plus would surely lead to the over mining of the soiL The third
illustration is still more remote. There has been some call for
a machinery efficiency use program, the utilization of avail-
able machinery such as combines, sprayers, drills, etc. over a
more or less large area during the entire season. This program
is efficiency to the nth degree, although it often includes indi-
rect subsidies. Such programs accelerated by improved trans-
portation and monetary reward for efficiency have started a
trend, We have something new - the fly-by-night transient
farmer, a possible menace to conservation of the son.
This book is not an effort to compile a text for use in high
schools; it is but an aid to those of longer training and ability
who have that responsibility. It is not a technical treatise on
cons'ervation, such a treatise should be compiled by a brilliant
writer, who at the same time evaluates and classifies all allied,
special texts and credits each special reference, including com-
plete bibliographical reference. Do not then expect that this
book will throw a search beam of incandescent light on the
entire subject and problems of conservation. Its writer can be
compared rather toa cowman in the darkness of overtime ef-
fort, carrying but a kerosene lantern with its five foot beam
of light limited in area but very adequate for the closest double
check. Picture this cowman as he gets ready for daylight and
the next day; repairing a machine here or a leaky trough there,
counting hoof marks at the breached fence, repairing as far as
possible yesterday's accidents, breakdowns and mistakes and
thus getting ready for tomorrow's urgent needs and efforts.
