<br />Ou1363 <br /> <br />^ <br /> <br />GLOSSARY OF WATER MANAGEMENT TERMS <br /> <br />ABLATION--The process by which ice and snow waste away as a result of <br />melting and evaporation. <br /> <br />ACCELERATED EROSION--Erosion which is greater than would have occurred <br />under natural conditions, because of the activities of man, or as <br />the result of a catastrophic Elvent. <br /> <br />ACTIVE STORAGE CAPACITY--The total amount of reservoir capacity available <br />for seasonal or cyclic water storage. <br /> <br />ACTIVITY-DAY--A statistical unit of recreation use by one person in pursuit <br />of a single activity for all or a portion of one day. <br /> <br />ADJUSTED MEAN ANNUAL RUNOFF--Recorded mean annual runoff adjusted to another <br />period, or adjusted to account for a specific upstream addition or <br />depletion. See COMPIJI'ED MEAN ANNUAL RUNOFF. <br /> <br />ADVANCE PLANNING--Preconstruction planning, after authorization of a <br />project, but before the initiation of construction. <br /> <br />AF'l'ERBAY RESERVOm--A reservoir downstream from a main reservoir and used <br />for reregulation of peak flows from a hydroelectric power plant, <br />although it may serve other purposes such as recreation. <br /> <br />ALLarMENTS (ECONOMICS)--Funds made available for specific projects or <br />activities. <br /> <br />ALTERNATIVE COST--The cost of the least costly single-purpose alternative <br />means of providing the same benefits. The alternative may be a <br />single-purpose project at the same site. <br /> <br />ANADROMOUS--Pertaining to fish that ascend rivers to spawn. <br /> <br />AJltNUAL--Occurring once during or accUlllUlated over a consecutive l2-month <br />period of time for which the beginning date is identified. <br /> <br />l-A <br /> <br />
