GLOSSARY OF WATER MANAGEMENT TERMS

WASTE WATER--Tha.t water for which disposal is more econanical than
treatment, if necessary, and reuse at the point of its occurrence.
Waste water to one user may be a desirable supply to the same or
another user at a different location.

WASTE~ATER Rl!X:LAMATION--The process of restoring water fran municipal,
industrial and agricultural waste for beneficial purposes, whether
by means of special facilities or through natural processes.

WATER BUlJGET--8ee HYDROLOOIC BUOOET.

WATER DEMAlID SCHEDULE--.A schedule of the water requirements for a
particular purpose, as for irrigation, power, municipal supply,
plant transpiration, and so forth.

WATER QUALITY--A te:nn used to describe the chemiCal, physiCal, and
biological characteristics Of ,water in respect to its suitability
for a particular purpose. The same water may be of good quality for
one purpose or use, while bad for another.

WATER Rm;l.UIREMENT (AGRICULTURAL)--The total quantity of water, regardless
of its source, required by crops for their normal growth under
field conditions. It may include water applied in irrigation,
precipitation, and ground water available to the crops.

WATER RIGHT--A legaJ.ly protected right, granted by law, to take possession
of water occurring in a water supply and to divert that water and put
it to beneficial use.

WATER SALVAGE--8ee SALVAGED WATER.

WATERSHED MANAGEMENT--The analysis, protection, developnent, operation,
and maintenance of a drainage basin for the optimum control and
conservation Of all, its resources including the quality, quantity,
and timing of water produced by the basin.

WATER TABLE--The upper surface of a zone of saturation, except where
that surface is fo:nned by an impermeable body.

WATER YEAR--A continuous 12-month period Of time for which water records
a.re canpJ.ied and summarized. In the Pacific Southwest it starts
with October 1.

WETLANDS--La.nds covered by shallow water, marshes, and seasonally flooded
lands subject to change through drainage or other land developnent
measures.
