<br />001 <br /> <br />GLOSSARY OF WATER MANAGEMENT TERM3 <br /> <br />CANOPY--The cover or crown formed by the green leaves, needles, and <br />branches of all trees. <br /> <br />CAPACITY--The measure of goOds or services for which a device, conveyance, <br />system, etc. is designed. <br /> <br />CAPITAL COSTS--Nonrecurring costs and expenses required to construct a <br />project from the inception of plamling to completion of construction. <br /> <br />CARRYlNG CAPACITY (GRAZlliG)--The total number of animal-unit months <br />which are available frcan a given tract of land. <br /> <br />cfs-~bbreviation for cubic-feet per second. <br /> <br />cfs-DAY (Abbreviation for cubic-feet per second per day. )--The volume of <br />water represented by a flow of 1 cubic-foot per second for 24 hours. <br />It is equal to 1.983 acre-feet. <br /> <br />cfsm--Use csm. <br /> <br />CHANNEL STORAGE--Water temporariJ,y stored in a channel when inflow exceeds <br />that which can be immediateJ,y discharged, resulting in an increase <br />in water surface elevation. It is maximum when in a riSing stage <br />the inflow and outflow are equal and the depth of flow is a maximum. <br /> <br />CLOSED BASm--A basin is considered closed with respect to surface flow <br />if its topography prevents the occurrence of visible outflow. It is <br />closed hydrOlogicalJ,y if neither surface nor underground outflow can <br />occur. <br /> <br />Cct4MERCIAL FOREST IAND--Forest land which is producing or is ca:pa.ble of <br />producing crops of industrial wood and not withdrawn from timber <br />utilization by statute or administrative regulation. This! includes <br />both accessible and inaccessible o.reas and both operable and <br />currently inoperable stands of trees. <br /> <br />COMPREHENSIVE PLAN--A plan for water resources developnent the.t considers <br />all economic and social factors and provides the greatest overall <br />benefits to the region as a whole. <br /> <br />COMPUTED MEAN ANImAL RUNOFF--Runoff derived from recorded runoff at other <br />locations, or other recorded meteorologic or hydrOlogic data.
