.'

OOl07G

.

.

HOW WOULD TWO FORKS FUNCTION AS A FLOOD CONTROL DAM?

The flood control function of TWO FORKS Dam would be integrated

with the downstream Chatfield Dam, a flood-control dam proposed by the

Corps of Engineers. TWO FORKS Dam would provide control of floods

originating on the South Platte and its tributaries over the extensive

area including and upstream fran the Nox,th Fork. Chatfield Dam would

be required to control floods originating on Plum Creek and several small

tributaries entering the South Platte below TWO FORKS Oam. The June 1965

flood amply demonstrates the need for control of Plum Creek as a flood

hazard.

The optimum flood-control capacities needed in the TWo Forks and

Chatfield Reservoirs will be worked out jointly by the Bureau of

Reclamation and the Corps of Engineers. With both Two Forks and

Chatfield built, Denver would be materially protected from damaging

floods. Additional tributaries are being studied to determine the best

means of flood control.

One very important fact should be noted with regard to the flood

control offered by TWO FORKS. The intake facilities for the City of

Denver are at and above Waterton, at points below TWO FORKS DAM but

above Chatfield Dam. A flood on the large South Platte drainage above

Waterton of the magnitude of the June 1965 flood from the tiny Plum

Creek drainage would have critically damaged Denver's water supply intake

works, the supply pipeline leading from that intake, and the Kassler

rilteration Plant. Denver's water supply would be severly limited until

the damaged facilities could be repaired or restored. TWO FORKS Dam and

Reservoir would provide flood security for Denver's water supply, in

addition to its important function as a team-mate to Chatfield.

4

7/65
