I:.'

'-<'"

o DRY SIDE CANAL

The canal would be the major feature of 'the water distribution system,
carrying water about 27.4 miles from RIDGES BASIN PillfPING PLANT (INFORNATION
SIGN 4) w",seward to 'ehe project land. Ih", crossin!; w(mld be abridge.

Canal capacity: Initial 700 cubic feet per second with water 7.6 feet
deep and 53 feet wide, gradually diminishing to 230
cubic feet per second with water 4.8 feet deep and
27 feet wide at the lower end of the canal.
Earth lined for approximately 20 miles, with stock fencing to keep
livestock out
Concrete li,ned for 0.9 mile, with 8-foot fencing to prevent entry of
livestock and wildlife. One crossing for wildlife
would be provided.

Distance to Information Sign 7: 0.9 mile
~ DRY SIDE CANAL CROSSING

A total of; 56,262 acres would be i.rrigated from this canal by means
of 7 systema of laterals consisting of about 162 miles of buried pipe.
Sprinkler irrigation would be used. Irrigation of about 75 percent of the
land would Use gravity since the gradient between the canal turnouts"and
the land is sufficient to develop the necessaco' pressure for the sprinklers.
For the remainder, pumping plants >lould be const::ucted to develop sufficient
pressure.

Distance to Information Sign 8: 0.1 mile

o

LONG HOLLOW TUNNEL INLET

The area to the southwest, with a marker, is the site of the portal
of a 3.2-mile section of the DRl SIDE CANAL that would be a tunnel constructed
through the divide separating the Animas and La Plata River drainages. The
concrete-lined tunnel would ~ave a finished diameter of 10.5 feet.

Distance to Information Sign 9: 8.6 miles

'if! Point-or-Interest: RED MESA IRRIGATION PUMPING PLANT'

This drive is an optional side trip without a marked information sign.
The point-of-interest shown on the map on County Road 126 is tne site of one
of five proposed irrigation pumping plant sites that would be needed where
the gradient between the canal turnouts and the land to be 'irrigated is not
sufficient to develop the necessary pressure for the sprinkler systems.
(See the, map, symbol <), for location of other pumping plants.)

:~"

,

L_
