~~!

Q
N
~
N

LOWER GUN!{ISON #2-MONTROSE COUNTY

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

I. OBJECTIVES

A. To reduce deep percolation from irrigated fields by 17,000 acre
feet, seepage from on-farm earthen ditches by 12,000 acre-feet and
seepage from off-farm earthen laterals by 3,000 acre-feet. These are
annual reduction goals.

B. To reduce on-farm/off-farm salt loading by 73,530 tons/year on-farm
and by 8,170 tons/year off-farm by the end of the projected 20 year
application of the program.

C. To minimize adverse effect of salinity control practices on wetland
and wildlife habitat by identifying opportunities that will replace
wildlife values foregone.

U. PLANNING ACTIVITIES
A. On-farm and Off-farm
1. The second sign up period for the Lower Gunnison #2 Montrose
County area was held in February 1991. A total of 59 CRSC-1's
were received. The total CRSC-1's on hand to date is 99.

",;%~~
w..:~:;.;:
;f;;."*.

-.......
i.....:.,-.:.
t~).:r'

2. Twenty nine (29) requests were serviced during FY 1991.
Fourteen (14) requests were cancelled and 15 requests were
developed into plans. Fourteen (14) of these plans were
converted to salinity contracts obligating FY 1991 cost-share
funds. It is expected that 28 of the on hand requests will be
developed into salinity plans during FY 1992. Two (2) of these
plans will come from the Delta F.O. and 26 from the Montrose F.O.

3. Small group job applications have been received that will
support on farm work. Three of these prioritize high and should
be serviced during FY 1992. These group jobs normally include 2
to 3 people on small laterals from larger supply canals.

4. Approximately 500 land owners live in this area.
Approximately 50 are minority and limited resource farmers.
Eight of these people are currently district cooperators. One
(1) minority and two limited resource farmers received contracts
FY 91. A special mailing to inform these people of the program
benefits resulted in 6 more sign ups this year or about 10% of
the total FY 91 sign up. It was felt that this was a very good
response.

5. sixteen of the next 28 high priority sign ups indicated
interest in developing wetland and wildlife habitat. For these,
three part conservation treatment plans will be developed;
Improved management, structural practices, and wildlife
development. Management includes IWM and Conservation Cropping
Sequence. Structural practices will include practices listed on
the National Practice List for Colorado River salinity Program.
The others will develop 2 part conservation treatment plans;
rmnroved manaa_ent and structural Dractices. .c",.
