~e Commission is directed to:

(1) study existing statutes and regulations governing the
retention, management, and disposal of the public lands;
(2) revie.. the policies and practices of the Federal agencies

(3) compile data necessary to understand and determine the
various demands on the public lands ..hich no.. exist and

..hich are likely to exist ..ithin the foreseeable fUture; and

(4) recommend such modifications in existing la..s, regula tions,

policies, and practices as ..ill in the judgement of the

Commission best serve to carry out the policy of providing

"the maximum benefit to the general public. "

The Commission shall submi t its report not later than December 31, 1968,
to the President and to the Congress.

President signed the t..o related acts. Both of these expire on June 30, 1969.
They ..ere passed as interim authority pending the final recommendations of
the Public Land La.. Review Commission.

The Classification and Multiple Use Act originated as H.R. 5159, sent to

the Congress by the Department of the Interior on March 28, 1963. As drafted

by the Department of the Interior, the bill ..as a declaration of multiple use

policy modeled after the National Forest Multiple Use Act of 1960, 74 Stat. 215,
