CDOW
FY-97 ISMP Proposal
Page 3

accordance with the ISMP Handbook. Late-juvenile/adult
squawfish are sampled in. the three rivers using boat
mounted electrofishing equipment. Sympatric fish
populations will be sampled using the same electrofishing
equipment. Late-juvenile/adult squawfish sampling will
also be conducted in backwaters on the Yampa Riv.er using
a ~2" wall mesh by ~" inside mesh trammel net during the
sympatric species monitoring ef1;ort. post-Iarval/Age-O
squawfish are sampled using a ~5' x 4' x ~/8" ace mesh
seine. Humpback chub sampling is conducted using a ~2"
wall mesh by ~" inside mesh, 75 foot long trammel net.
Numbers of endangered fish expected to be sampled are
5-~5 late-juvenile/adult squawfish in each' of the three
rivers, less than 5 post-Iarval/Age-O squawfish, and
about 80 humpback chubs. All data is stored in a
database maintained by the U.S. Fish and wildlife
Service.

VII.

Sympatric species monitoring is done on a separate river
trip from Colorado squawfish monitoring because during
sympatric sampling the netters often are so busy catching
fish that it is difficult for them to net a Colorado
squawfish when one appears. Colorado squawfish are
collected during this effort as much as possible.
Sympatric monitoring is currently planned to be done
annually.

Humpback chub sampling is conducted every three years.
The last sampling was done in September 1997.

Task Description and Schedule:

A. Conduct late-juvenile/adult Colorado squawfish
monitoring in the Colorado, white, and Yampa Rivers
during early to mid May 1998.
B. Conduct post-Iarval/Age-O Colorado squawfish
monitoring in the Colorado River during late
September 1998.
C. Conduct sympatric fish population monitoring in the
Colorado, white, and Yampa Rivers during late May to
early June 1998.
D. Perform data summary and submit it to the database
manager by January 15, 1999.

VIII.

FY-98 Work:
