Where artificial
heat is employed, special care shall be taken to keep
the shotcrete from drying.

f. Measurement and payment.-Measurement, for
payment, of shotcrete slope protection will be made
at the square yards of coating measured in place.

Payment for s~otcrete slope protection '!ViII be made
at the unit price per square yard bid therefor in the
schedule which unit price shall include the costs of
all labor and materials connected therewith.
including furnishing cement, water, and sand.
Furnishing and placing reinforcing mesh, furnishing
and applying s~aling compound, and preparing the
cut slopes.

249. PREPARATION OF SURFACES
UNDER ROADWAY EM8ANKMENTS

a. Surface treatment.-Where embankments are to
be built on sloping ground, the surface of the
ground shall be prepared to provide bond with the
embankments and prevent slipping thereof. Where
embankments are to be placed on smooth firm
surfaces and wtJere shallow embankments are to be
placed, the original ground surface shall be
thoroughly plowed or stepped as directed to insure
proper bonding of the new and existing material.
Where embankments are to be built on steep rock
slopes, trenches shall be blasted in the rock surface
as directed. The cost of the work described above
shall be included in the unit price per cubic yard bid
in the schedule for excavation, all classes, for
roadway.

b. Removal of unsuitable material.-Where the
ground surface under an embankment is not
suitable, as determined by the contracting officer,
for a foundation for the embankment, the
con tr actor shall strip the area under the
embankment of such unsuitable material to such
depth as directed. The material so removed shall be

SPECIFICATIONS NO. DC.6945
(SUPPLEMENTAL NOTICE NO.3)

'.

disposed of as provided in Paragraph 252.
t It is anticipated that stripping unsuitable material
under embankments will be to an average depth of 3
inches or less. Measurement, for payment, of
stripping umuitable material under embankments
will be made to the neat lines as calculated from
computer data and payment therefor wi II be made
at the unit price per cubic yard bid in the schedule
for excavation, all classes, for roadway. For
purposes of measurement for payment, the stripping
neatlines shall be considered to be 3 inches below
original ground surface. t

.

c. Removal of topsoil.- The topsoil under
embankments shall be removed in accordance with
Paragraph 259.

250. CONSTRUCTION OF
ROADWAY EMBANKMENTS

a. General.-Embankments shall be constructed to
the established lines and grades which, in general,
will ~ the lines and grades shown on the drawings,
increased by such heights and widths as necessary to
allow for settlement. The embankments shall be
maintained by the contractor to proper heights,
dimensions, and slopes until the final completion
and acceptance of all of the work under the
oontract.

b. Materials.-No brush, roots, sod, or other
perishable or unsuitable materials shall be placed in
embankments. Material containing sand in such
proportion as to prevent it from compacting
properly shall not be used, except with prior
approval. Clods or hard lumps of earth having
maximum dimensions of more than 8 inches shall be
broken up before or after being placed on the
embankments. Cobbles or rocks more than 6 inches
in size shall not be placed in the upper 12 inches of
embankments. When suitable material is not
available from roadway excavation for constructing
the upper 12 inches of embankm8lts, suitable
material may be borrowed from designated borrow
areas. The contractor may elect to remove the
ollersize material from the upper 12 inches of
embankments by raking or other approved methods.
Where there is a choice of materials. the best shall
be used on the top of embankments for at least 12
inches in depth. No material shall be placed in the
embankments when either the material or the
surface on which it would be placed is frozen.

.

c. Construction.-AII material shall be deposited in
embankments so that rock, cobbles, and gravel will
be well distributed through the other materials and
not nested in any position within or under the
embankments. Embankments formed of rock shall
be built carefully so that the large rock will be well
distributed and the unfilled spaces shall be filled
completely with smaller rock and earth so as to
form a dense solid embankment.
