LOCATION

South centrnl Colorado along the Purgatoire River in Las Animas
County. The dam and reservoir will be located about 4 miles
upstream from the city of Trinidad. The irrigable lands are in
the valley and on the uplands north of the valley starting
immediately east of the city of Trinidad and extending downstream
for approximately 25 miles.

AUTHORIZATION

The Trinidad Dam and Reservoir was authorized for construction
by the Corps of Engineers under Public Law 85-500, 85th Congress,
S. 3910, July 3, 1958 as described in H. D. 325, 84th Congress,
2d Session, January 1956. Repayment of costs allocated to irri-
gation are to be in accordance with Reclamation law, hence the
irrigation aspects of the development are the responsibility of
the Bureau of Reclamation.

The plan, consisting principally of the Corps of Engineers multiple-
purpose dam and reservoir, includes the function of irrigation. The
project will store and regulate the water supplies of the existing
irrigation systems which have been included in the plan of
development. Flood waters, which in the past were stored in
Model Reservoir, will be stored by the project and made available
to the irrigable lands. !I The plan does not include any Federal
improvements, rehabilitation, modifications, or extensions to the
existing irrigation facilities.

!I Because of sedimentation, Model Reservoir no longer has the
capacity to store its share of the flood flows.
