Essentially, the SCS
conducts special, irrigation salt source area unit studies to: (I) determine
extent of salt source 'loads 'to the Colorado River from private irrigated,
range and forested lands: and (2) determine extent of onfarm irrigation and
land treatment improvements needed to increase irrigation efficiencies,
, reduce deep percolation losses, and reduce runoff and erosion in lowering
total' salt loading to the Colorado River. The SCS conducts these studies
under authority of section 6 of Public Law 93-566 using special river basin,
stUdy funding.

A brief status report of these unit studies are presented in Table IV-I.
Studies completed in FY 1981 are: Moapa Valley (NV); Big Sandy (UT);
and Lower Gunnison (CO). The McElmo Creek (CO) and the Virgin Valley Sub-
evaluation Unit (NY & AZ) are scheduled for completion in 1982. Inactive
or suspended studies are presently "not scheduled" because of various
reasons. The palo Verde study is pending the USBR lateral study. The
Little Colorado River has limited potential because of scattered and minimal
irrigation benefits. The other studies either lack significant 'irrigation
benefits or local support and initiative for further study.

Table IV-l

Status Report
Irrigation Sa.t Source Unit Studies
Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Program

plannin status
Review Preliminary
Draft Investi ation

Unit Study
Area

Implement Date
Started Published

EIS

1) Grand Valley (CO)
2) Uinta (UT)
3) Big Sandy River (WY)
4) Moapa Valley Subeval.(NV) -
5) Lower Gunnison (CO)
6) MCElmo (CO)
7) Virgin Valley Subeval.
(NY & AZ)
5) price-San Rafael (UT)
9) Upper Virgin (UT)
10) San Juan
Mancos Valley (CO)
11) Colorado River
Indian Reserv.
