Gov. Gail Schoettler

"Animas-La Plata project opponents infonned me late yesterday that they have
not agreed to holding a public meeting on October 4,1997, to discuss the two alternative
proposals developed for this project. This date had been tentatively agreed to, and
project proponents have agreed to it. However, opponents believe that they need more
time to prepare, and until both sides are ready and willing to agree on the timing for such
a public meeting, there is no point in scheduling it at tins time,,"
"When Governor Romer asked me to convene a discussion with both sides on

this project, we both knew that this would be a difficult task" We also believed, and still
believe, that it is critically important to allow the public a chance to participate in this
process and to review these two proposals" Although the parties cannot reach agreement
on a date right now, I still believe that it is important to have a public meeting on these
proposals and will continue to work with both sides to accomplish this goa!."
"I also intend to continue working with both sides to try to arrive at some
solution to this controversial issue" The Romer-Schoettler process has succeeded in
narrowing the issues and in producing these two conceptual proposals. However;-as
these proposals are conceptual. much more infonnation and detail needs to be filled-out.
As a result, I will continue to work with both sides to further refme and develop these
proposals" "

Contact: Jim Carpenter.
Governor's Press Office
(303) 866-4572

130 STATE CAPITOL

DENVER, COLORADO 80103

\3031666.1087, fAX (303)666-5469
