RECEIVED
STATE OF COLORADO AUG 0 5 1997
OFFICE OF THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR co~::..~~~

GAll. S. SCHOETILER
LlEUTENA1'lT GOVE&"OR

NEWS RELEASE

July 31,1997

Lt" Governor Gail Schoettler announced today that she has received two conceptual alternative

proposals for the Animas-La Plata water project. Lt. Gov. Schoettler had asked both supporters and

opponents of this federal water project located in Southwestern Colorado to each develop and submit a

conceptual alternative by July 31, 1997"

"I am very pleased that each side has worked hard since March to develop these two

,,' " alternatives. In the next two weeks, I will be getting together with representatives from each side, the

Interior Department, the EP A and the state of New Mexico to see if each side is willing to continue

working toward some consensus resolution."

Both sides officially submitted their proposals by the July 31 deadline. The project supporters

submitted their conceptual alternative on July 8. The project opponents plan to formally release their

alternative proposal on Monday, August 4, after receiving some final necessary information.

These two proposals were developed as part of the Romer/Schoettler process. This process

began in October of last year to negotiate a solution to this long-standing controversy" The Animas-La

Plata water project was authorized by Congress in 1968 and would help resolve the Ute Indian water

rights claims in the region.

Contact: Carole Witka
Lt.
