SCHOETILER <br />LlEUTENA1'lT GOVE&"OR <br /> <br /> <br />NEWS RELEASE <br /> <br />July 31,1997 <br /> <br />Lt" Governor Gail Schoettler announced today that she has received two conceptual alternative <br /> <br />proposals for the Animas-La Plata water project. Lt. Gov. Schoettler had asked both supporters and <br /> <br />opponents of this federal water project located in Southwestern Colorado to each develop and submit a <br /> <br />conceptual alternative by July 31, 1997" <br /> <br />"I am very pleased that each side has worked hard since March to develop these two <br /> <br />,,' " alternatives. In the next two weeks, I will be getting together with representatives from each side, the <br /> <br />Interior Department, the EP A and the state of New Mexico to see if each side is willing to continue <br /> <br />working toward some consensus resolution." <br /> <br />Both sides officially submitted their proposals by the July 31 deadline. The project supporters <br /> <br />submitted their conceptual alternative on July 8. The project opponents plan to formally release their <br /> <br />alternative proposal on Monday, August 4, after receiving some final necessary information. <br /> <br />These two proposals were developed as part of the Romer/Schoettler process. This process <br /> <br />began in October of last year to negotiate a solution to this long-standing controversy" The Animas-La <br /> <br />Plata water project was authorized by Congress in 1968 and would help resolve the Ute Indian water <br /> <br />rights claims in the region. <br /> <br />Contact: Carole Witka <br />Lt.
