I

~.
( ~321

I

WATER AND RELATED LAND RESOURCES

I

YAMPA RIVER BASIN IN COLORADO AND WYOMING

I

II. INTRODUCTION

I

This report presents information on water and related land resources of
the Yampa River Basin in the states of Colorado and Wyoming. Information
on the Colorado portion of the basin is based on a cooperative study by
the Colorado Water Conservation Board and the United States Department of
Agriculture. Information for the Wyoming portion of the basin was devel-
oped by the United States Department of Agriculture and the State
Engineer's Office. Wyoming data was developed only to the extent neces-
sary to evaluate the existing and proposed projects which would be
affected by developments within the basin.

I

I

I

In the study of the Colorado River there is an urgent need for a
systematic survey of the water and related land resources and the asso-
ciated problems in the Yampa River Basin. Basinwide information is
needed to present the relationships between programs and projects of
various departments and agencies working in the basin as an aid to the
efficient development of the basin's resources. Development in most of
the basin has reached a stage where expansion and development depend upon
efficient use of the presently available water, salvage of nonbeneficially
used water, or the development of new water supplies. Conditions in the
Yampa River Basin are such that an overall framework plan is a prereq-
uisite to the sound development of Public Law 566 projects that are coor-
dinated with existing or prospective projects or programs of other
agencies.

I

I

I

I

The principal objective of this study was the collection and development
of information on water and related land resource use and management with
particular regard to multiple use, to provide a basis for coordinating
USDA programs of watershed protection, flood prevention, land and water
management, fish and wildlife development, recreational development,
municipal and industrial water development with the related activities of
local, State, and other Federal agencies. Information is also presented
which will provide a basis for development of projects under the Watershed
Protection and Flood Prevention Act, public Law 566, as amended. This
study will serve as an important source of information in the preparation
of an overall water plan for the State of Colorado.

I

I

I

I

Participation of the United States Department of Agriculture was
authorized under provisions of Section 6 of the Watershed Protection and
Flood Prevention Act (Public Law 566), 83d Congress, as amended and

I

I
