The deparbtent is
seriously evaluating, \Vith the help of outside consultants, hydroelectric pov:er
generation, especially Fumped-back storage to meet the five or six hours of
daily wax:iroum electric energy derrand.

INFORNATION ~1EED

"\.ce're not overlooking the Fossibilities for pur.;ped-back storage for power
generation," Ogilvie said, "though v;e've not enough .infornation nov' to even
oonjecture about it."

The d2parbtent does a little pm,er generating nOt" at its nilliams Fork
dam. It also has built into the Gross Dam on South Eoulder Creek provisions
for future electric FO"er gpneration. It is also considering a dam in conjunc-
tion with the T\\'O Forks Project planned at the confluence of the South Platte
River and its l':orth Fork near Deckers, Colo. The Eagle-Piney plan is getting
thorough scrutiny for po....-er FOtential.

Ogilvie said to l:;ecome feasible, a plant \muld have to generate 300 to 400
IIEgawatts of po.....er. !.)hether there's enough \vater available for that isn't
knovm.

One of the unavoidable aspects of \vater developrr.ent is fluctuating reser-
voirs. The \\ater departrr:ent last SUIm!er placed a prominent sign at Dillon
Reservoir to call attention to it as a fluctuating body of \Vater, not a lake.

Saunders says Dillon could l:;ecorre a "surge tank" in sorre instances. And
there's no question broad mud flats will surround the now-full reservoir in
a period of prolnH')erl water sltortnges.
