.

.

002315

3

II. Implement and DOCUITIc:mt a Hydrologic Screening Model for the UCRB Using an
Existing Hydrologic ~Iodel Which can Easily be Set Up ami i-Iodified.

During the month of July, work on the fIYDR{ilSS ~Iodel consisteu of setting
up data input tables and conducting tests of the moueI. Tables created
include flow and stage tables and the model network structure. The network
structure table converts the river network node structure (which was
presented in last month's progress report) into table format for data entry.
The Elm, table \,as cl'cateu to express the hyd rologic reconl for each
control point, and was derived from data files produced by the Colorado
River System Simulation (CRSS) mouel and USGS gage records. The third
table created is the stage or depletiQns table. The stage table contains
data on depletions in the basin as well as infonnation on reservoir
operations. 111is table also was derived primarily for CRSS files and
is subject to verification and refinement as the modeling effort proceeds.

To uate, the model has not been rWl successfully using UCRB data, Problems
have been l'ncOlU1teredin increas ing the lliml'l1S ion of IIYDR{ilSS programs to
accept dat:! arrays of the size necessary to simulate the operations of the
Colorado River. Work will get wlderway in ^ugust to program arowld this
limitation of IIYDR{ilSS.

In other (levelopments, the \\1'E TCGlIl has bcen contacted by the State of
Wyoming regarding their contracting \,ith the University of Wyoming Water
for Fnergy Resource Center to evaluate anu interface with the Water for
Energy Project. Mr. Tom Wesche, Research Scientist with the center, has
been assigned to the proj ect. ~Ir. Wesche I s efEort \vill be threefold and
\vill initially center arowld the following activities.

1. Contacts \vith Wyoming State agencies regarding their knowledge
of the model, their input into the clatabase, and their possible
future use of such a model.

2. Development of concise descriptions and evaluations of the over-
all model and its components (IIYDJ<0SS, PI"\BSr~l, Tcmperature).

3, Assessment, in regard to content, qual i ty, and source, of the
Wyoming infonnation currcntly prcscnt in the model's database.

To facilitate cooperation and interaction \vith ~Ir. Tom Wesche, ~1r. Terry
Waddle, liydrologist with the Instre~un FJ ml and ^quatic Systems Group at
WELlJT, and ~Jr. Bob Green, Hydrologist at the Regional Office of FWS, have
been assi!,'ned as contact persons. During the month of .July, telephone
contact \1aS made with ~.1r. Wesche. The progress of the Wyoming evaluating
study will be reported in future progress reports.
