[,

.

.'

00043'~

r -,

13

Following this, the program continued with remarks by Mrs. Suther-

land, Mr. Richard Weaver, and Mr. John Teems. We would like to

make the following comments on their relllllrks.

"~.

First, Mr. Weaver stated that the salts that have accumulated

over the years in the sump area could only be removed by irrigation

and would remain in that area in spite of the project. Also that

in order to remove or reduce the salts the water table would have

to be lowered and the salts then flushed. In essence we agree

with this statement; however adequate drainage must be afforded

with the flusbing process so that the salts can be carried away

from the area. The project would supply a means to lower the
water table .and with careful regulation remove the salts wi thout

adverse affects 00 others. Also Mr. Weaver suggested spraying

tbe brush instead of controlling its growth by dropping the water
table. The ecological affect of sucb action would be significant,

its affect on plants and wildlife would certainly bring strong

protest fro. the ecologically-oriented groups which are now cri-

tically reviewing all major projects ill tbe rural areas. It is

tbe understanding of tbe Board that most ecologically-oriented

groups active in Colorado are aware of this project and substantially

approve it.
