This would amount to about 600 man-days annually
comprising 100 man-days of pheasant hunting, 100 man-days of dove
hunting, and about 400 man-days of rabbit hunting. Thus the water
salvage project would result in a loss of 2,600 man-days of upland-
game hunting comprising 1,100 man-days of pheasant hunting, 100
man-days of dove hunting, and 1,400 man-days of rabbit hunting
annually.

The project would eliminate important waterfowl production and win-
tering habitat in the water salvage area of the Closed Basin. Low-
ering ground-water levels to a minimum of 8 feet below the ground
level would reduce the vegetation to a varying extent over at least
100,000 acres. Construction of small surface drains to divert ir-
rigation return flows and ponded water into the main channel would
materially reduce available wetland habitat in the project area.
As a result, some 100,000 acres of seasonally flooded wetlands of
value for waterfowl production and migration would be lost. A rest-
ing area would be established in the main channel and the laterals,
but nesting would be insignificant because of the lack of food and
cove r.

Lowering the water table 8 feet would eliminate much of the water-
fowl hunting in the project area. Some waterfowl hunting would re-
main along the 39 miles of the main conveyance channel, the 92 miles
of laterals, and on San Luis Lake. Waterfowl hunting with the proj-
ect would average 1,000 man-days annually. Other wildlife-oriented
recreation would be concentrated around San Luis Lake and would aver-
age about 500 man-days annually. Thus, the water salvage project
would result in a loss of 1,200 man-days of waterfowl hunting and
500 man-days of wildlife-oriented recreation.

The project would eliminate fur-animal habitat, thus reducing the
population on the project area. Trapping would continue at a low
level.

Table 2 summarizes wildlife and wildlife-oriented recreation with-
out the project and with the project.
