Zirkel
Wilderness. Since a majority of the prime riparian habitat
surrounding the main and west forks of the Encampment River was
left out of the 1980 additions to the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness, the
addition of Davis Peak could help correct that deficiency. The
large meadow at Stump Park and the Buffalo Ridge region create
sound, manageable boundaries for the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness and
should be included there.

Some of the main access trails to the northern parts of the
wilderness were also excluded in the 19080 additions. All provide
a high quality backcountry experience, and belong in the
wilderness. Making the wilderness more accessible from the north,
by moving the boundaries closer to the state line road, would help
relieve some of the pressure on the Slavonia area, which suffers
from overuse.

The Encampment River is rated as an excellent fishery, and the
area surrounding it contains important elk calving grounds and
migration routes. The area is popular with both fishermen and
hunters,

Resource Information

Resource uses such as grazing, minerals, oil and gas, and off-road
vehicles present little conflict with wilderness designation
because of minimal occurrence of such uses in the FPA. Similarly,
timber offers little conflict, since the Forest Service has a
timber supply almost three times the total demand without
harvesting the Davis Peak FPA.15

15Routt National Forest Plan, November 1983.

11
