031957

about the Canyon of Lodore of the Green River:

"This has been a chapter of disasters and toils, notwithstanding
which the Canyon of Lodore was not devoid of scenic interest even
beyond the power of the pen to tell. The roar of its waters was
heard unceasingly from the hour we entered it until we landed here.
No quiet in all that time. But its walls and cliffs, its peaks
and crags, its arnp~theatres and alcoves, tell a story of beauty
and grandeur that I hear yet -- and shall hear.~

The Browns Park section on the Green is unique, being a long, broad

valley. This area has spectacular wildlife, waterfowl in particular. It is

bounded on the north by Flaming Gorge and on the south by the Gates of Lodore.

This gives the area a certain protection from the elements, making it a long time

favorite wintering ground for man and wildlife.

The spectacular scenery of the Green and Yarnpa Rivers is one of their

"
n
~

major attractions. All who have seen them must agree they are outstandingly

remarkable.

Recreation

A variety of recreational activities can be enjoyed on the rivers.

~

Primarily they are known for being exciting white water rafting and kayaking

rivers. More people float these rivers than float the Colorado River through

1
the Grand Canyon. Although some of the rapids' are quite large, a trip with

a commercial outfitter does not require the passengers to have previous rafting

experience. For those who like the challenge of running rapids in a kayak or

without professional guides, private permits are available from the Park Service.

lRiver usage -- Number of riverfloat passengers.

Year Commercial Private Total
1969 3,192 2,548 5,740,
1970 7,699 2,06~ 9,762
1971 10,761 3,384 14,145
1972 12,837 4,322 17,159
1973 12,153 4,586 16,739
1974 9,552 4,216 13,768
