<br />000019 <br /> <br />Assessment of Available Data <br /> <br />Quantifying county expenditures for snow removal requires detailed <br />information about labor, such as the number of hours each employee <br />spends removing snow and performing related duties; capital expenditures <br />including the purchase price, depreciation and maintenance costs of <br />equipnent; and the cost of materials like cinder and chains. Since the <br />counties studied do not keep detailed records of these expenses (except, <br />La Plata which recently has begun to keep daily records of employee <br />activities and machine use to document possible future requests for <br />federal aid in winters of heavy snowfall), we estimate them with a <br />computer simulation model. Recommendations regarding the types of <br />records that counties could keep to determine costs more accurately <br />appear in the Appendix. <br /> <br />-6- <br />
