<br />. <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />~G6'7 <br /> <br />Through the Task Force's efforts, a Municipal Water <br />System Capital Improvements .plan has been completed and year <br />one construction proj~cts are underway, a center pivot <br />irrigation demonstration project is currently in operation'~ <br />and improvements in the Mancos Creek Farm are currently <br />being designed to improve the productivity of this tribally <br />operated farming venture. <br />The Task Force, in cooperation with the Tribal Planning <br />Department and Tribal Counsel, have developed a Preliminary <br />Tribal Water Resources Development Plan which addresses the <br />water resource needs of the Tribe as they relate to <br />_opportunities created by the Dolores River Project. The <br />plan is partly based upon on-site visits and extensive <br />communications with other tribal farming operations <br />including Navajo Agricultural Projects Industry CN.A.P.I.), <br />Ak Chin Community Farms, Salt River pima/Maricopa, Colorado <br />River Indian Tribes, Gila River, etc. <br />In addition,- an extensive negotiation process has been <br />undertaken with the City of Cortez regarding-the City's <br />capability and willingness to treat municipal and industrial <br />water for the Tribe. The Tribal Water Resources Task Force <br />has evaluated a number of alternatives to resolving the <br />municipal/industrial water needs of the Tribe.- This <br />evaluation was done in response to the currently inadequate <br />municipal and industrial water supply, treatment and <br />distribution system. Residents now haul water from the City <br />of Cortez for drinking purposes. The Tribe has contracted <br />with an independent engineering firm to determine the most <br />appropriate alternative to meeting .tribal water resource <br />development needs. <br />Based :upon this planning:-and review process and.. <br />res,f.l1tant r'ecommendat.ions, .the...Task--. Force completed' a . <br />preliminar~ Water Resources .Development Plan i~ May, 1984. <br />On May 31, 1984 the Tribal Council adopted the plan and <br />appointed ~.Plan Development Team made up of_the Planning <br />Director, Legal Counsel., .Task Force Coordinator,-. one Tribal <br />councilman .and a representa.tive. at large .from the Task.. <br />Force. The Development TeauLwas giv~n the .charter of <br />negotiating the approval and implementation of the plan with <br />respective parties from the Congress, Interior and Health <br />and Human Services Departments. <br /> <br />Current Situation: The Dolores Project <br /> <br />At this time, the Dolores River Project is under <br />construction and will eventually supply the Tribe annually <br />with 22,900 acre-feet of-irrigation water, 1000 acre-feet of <br />municipal ~nd industrial water, and 800 acre-feet of <br />recreational water.
