ao;H III

~,

April 1971

SUMMARY SHEETS

Upper Cunnison Project, Colorado

LOCATION

West-central Colorado along the Gunnison River and its tributaries
above Blue Mesa Reservoir.

PROJECT PLAN

The Upper Gunnison Project would provide water for irrigation, muni-
cipal, and industrial uses, recreational opportunities, and for fish
and wildlife. The water would be made available by storage releases
from two potential and one existing reservoir, use of project devel-
oped return flows, and by direct flow exchanges.

"
,

Elko Reservoir would be constructed on Tomichi Creek approximately
27 miles east of Gunnison, Colorado. Surplus flows of the stream
would be stored in the reservoir and released into the stream chan-
nel and the Crook ton Canal for conveyance to project lands between
the reservoir and the town of Parlin. Lands above the reservoir
and the Crook ton Canal would receive water through exchange of .
direct flows fXDm present uses below project facilities. The Crook-
ton Canal and existing ditch systems would distribute the irrigation
water to project lands. Return flow waters would be available for
reuse on lands along Tomichi Creek. Recreation and fish and wild-
life opportunities would be made available at the reservoir and
flows released to Tomichi Creek would maintain the stream fishery.

,

J

~

The Cement Creek Reservoir would be constructed on Cement Creek
about 26 miles north of Gunnison. Surplus flows of Cement Creek
would be stored in the reservoir and released for municipal, domes-
tic, fishery, and irrigation needs. The municipal and domestic
water would be made available to its users at or below the reservoir
and they would be responsible for its rediversion, treatment, and
distribution. The irrigation water would be released to the stream
channel to replace late season water supplies below the stream's
confluence with East River and thus make East River water above that
point available for exchange. The reservoir would provide recreation
and fish and wildlife opportunities and releases to Cement Creek would
maintain the stream fishery below the reservoir.

r:
t
,
r

The existing Taylor Park Reservoir located approximately 30 miles
northeast of Gunnison on the Taylor River would be operated for
maximum recreation, fish and wildlife benefits,. flood control, and
environment enhancement. Reservoir water would be released into
the stream to enhance fishery flows, stream ecology, and for irri-
gation and municipal and domestic uses.
