-

n02736

POLICY QUESTIONS THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED IN THE PROCESS

1. What are the limits on, or justifications for, the use of
catchable sized trout?

- Should DOW continue to use stocking to exceed natural
production as the principles say we may
- Should catchable trout be used in waters that do not
support year-round survival of trout?
- Should DOW continue to offer catchable fishing with no
extra cost, perhaps adjusting bag limits?
- What are the reasons why the public goes trout fishing?

2. What is the scope/relative amount of the wild trout/natural
reproduction waters that we will manage?

3. Should DOW change the current philosophy of maximizing
recreational opportunities to optimizing recreational
opportunities that reflect reduced stocking and greater use of
wild trout/natural reproduction waters? Assuming we define
what we mean by "Optimizing".

4. Managing in the future. Do we strive for more waters? Less
waters? More anglers? Less anglers? Should we strive to
provide more opportunities, greater diversity of opportunities
(if that is possible), reduced or changed opportunities? Can
we state our policy in terms of better managing the resource?

5. Is it possible to state the relative importance of sport fish
recreation compared to species protection, either globally or
by generic situation?

-rJ
~ ~~~ ~"~
rPA.J 1 /ffrrl-~ .,A/>' ~ ~
or pv"'1(~
~
