JACKSON RECOMMENDS

STATE-WIDE WATER MEETING
Guy C. Jackson, President Texas
Water Conservation Association,
recommends that a state - wide
meeting be called in order that all
Texans may come to an agreement
on the solution of their No.1 prob-
lem-that is, the water supply.
Although Texans, like all West-
erners, are fully conscious of the
importance of proper conservatlOn
and utilization of their water re-
sources, the particular situation
which prompts MI'. Jackson to rec-
ommend a state-wide meeting at
this time, is the extreme and Severe
drought which prevails throughout
the Southwest. The Department of
Interior recently released a report
entitled "The Drought in the
Southwestern United States" .in
which it is stated that the present
drought in the Southwest is one of
the worst eight droughts since the
thirteenth century. Mr. Jackson,
in urging this state-wide meeting,
recommends that all interests be
invited to send representatives to
participate in the conference, in-
cluding irrigation, municipal, in-
dustrial, navigation and State
agencies.

WESTERN DELEGATIONS

SUPPORT APPROPRIATIONS
Numerous delegations from va-
rious States throughout the West
have appeared before appropria-
tion committees for Interior dur-
ing the past several weeks. This
indicates that in many localIties
there is really a very urgent need
for some of the projects which are
being withheld because of the "no
new starts" policy.
A large delegation from the
State of New Mexico appeared be-
fore the Senate sub-committee late
in the month of April, supporting
the Vermejo and the Middle Rio
Grande projects. The latter area
was referred to in the report of
the President's Water Resources
Policy Commission as a sick area
and is most assuredly badly in need
of relief.
Another large delegation to ap-
pear before the Senate committee
came from Montana and North
Dakota. Montana was supporting
the Lower Marias, Missouri Diver-
sion Dam and Yellowtail. The
North Dakota group were also sup-
porting the Missouri Diversion
Dam as well as the Jamestown unit
of the Missouri-Souris division.

.

.

IMPORTANT LEGISLATION PENDING

Many of These Bills Will Die When Congress Adjourns
H.R. 1034, S. 358-Amend PaoI].ia project act, Colorado.
