002711

Garfield, Iron, Juab, Kane, Millard, Piute, Sanpete, Sevier, Washington, and

Wayne). These counties were members of a nonprofit corporation called the

Southern Utah Water Resources Development Corporation. In Washington and

Sanpete Counties, the County Conservancy District was the member agency to

this corporation while the other counties were represented by their respective

county commissions. This corporation contracted with North American Weather

Consultants of Santa Barbara, California for winter orographic cloud seeding

in this twelve county area. In 1975, the counties of San Juan and Tooele

joined the Southern Utah group, making a total of fourteen counties in the

project. San Juan County is represented in this corporation by its conser-

vancy district and Tooele is represented by its county commission. The project

uses a total of 75 ground generators located to seed the target areas.

The people in the RC&D of Northern Utah and Southern Idaho Counties have

been talking about a weather modification project for many years. This year

the three Utah Counties of Box Elder, Cache, and Rich; and the three Idaho

Counties of Oneida, Cassia, and Franklin, formed ,a nonprofit corporation

called the Utah-Idaho Weather Modification Corporation (UI\olMC). This summer

the UIWMC, on behalf of their three Utah Counties and a group of private

individuals from the border areas of Cassia and Oneida Counties, contracted

with Atmospherics, Incorporated, to seed clouds to suppress hail and enhance

precipitation.

b. Research

The bulk of our research, to date, has been done by the Utah Water

Research Laboratory in Logan. Dr. Geoffrey Hill has been the principal re-

searcher for the last few years. A contract was recently signed between the

Division and the Utah Water Research Laboratory in Logan for a research study

that will address the problem of measuring vertical motion, amounts of super

cooled water, and other critical meteorological parameters in the atmosphere;

that, when ,accurately measured, will add to the overall effectiveness of a

cloud seeding operation. Another contract has been signed between the

Division and the Water Research Laboratory in which we plan to study '!The

Climatology of Hailstorms in Utah - The Hail Suppression Potential by Cloud

Seeding." This study should give us a quantitative feel for the hail problem

in all of Utah, and will also explore different methods of evaluating a hail

suppression project in Utah. Mr. Ken Hubbard is the principal investigator.

12
